The Message I Didn’t See Right Away

I woke up to a sharp leg cramp—sudden and excruciating. I hovered somewhere between wanting to fall back asleep and knowing I wouldn’t be able to. The pain lingered just long enough to make the decision for me.
I was awake now.
That’s when I remembered my phone. I needed to charge it.
Except I couldn’t find my charger.
Of course.
Still half-asleep, I wandered around the house, scanning surfaces and corners, my phone in hand as I searched. That’s when I noticed the notification sitting quietly on my screen.
An unfamiliar number.
My thumb hesitated before tapping it.
The messages opened.
10:27 PM — Nice to meet you…
So it was him who texted last night.
I didn’t know exactly what I was supposed to feel, but I knew my cheeks were warm. I caught myself smiling at nothing, standing there with my phone in my hand.
Then I saw another message.
5:22 AM — Good morning. I still have a hangover from the concert. So awesome to see them live.
I stared at the screen longer than I needed to.
Should I reply right away?
Should I wait?
Well, I have to save his number first.
I glanced down at my phone battery again. Still low. Still no charger in sight.
It is what it is.
So I typed back.
7:45 AM — Good morning! Just woke up. Yes, I still do too. It was an awesome show. I still feel bad about that photo op I missed.
The reply didn’t take long.
And just like that, we were texting.
Nothing heavy. Nothing complicated. Just small talk, shared excitement, and the quiet ease of continuing something that had already begun.
Eventually, he told me he had to meet a friend for coffee and car stuff.
We said goodbye for now.
And when I finally set my phone down, I realized something had shifted—subtly, but undeniably.
The concert was over.
The night had passed.
But whatever this was… it had followed me into the morning.
